Five factors to consider when building a factory network

Networks in manufacturing environments need to address reliability, heat tolerance and interference resistance.

1. Start with operating flows, not only floor plans

A factory is not one uniform space. Production, warehouse, office, gate and technical zones have different device density, criticality and environmental conditions.

A useful survey records data flows, movement paths, device concentrations and periods when work cannot be interrupted. This establishes priorities instead of simply increasing device counts.

2. Design for stability and recovery

Backbone, segmentation, power and equipment cabinets should be considered as one connected system. A single undocumented point can lengthen incident isolation.

The plan should name critical components, appropriate resilience points and how teams identify abnormal conditions before they affect operations.

3. Prepare for operation after handover

As-built diagrams, IP plans, cable labels and equipment inventories let responsible teams operate without relying on individual memory. They also form a basis for controlled expansion.

Before finalising a design, decide who needs which information during an incident, a device change and an expansion review.
